The exciting baseball season is finally drawing to a close, and the playoffs are upon us, so I thought I would use this backdrop as the theme for my blog post. The term Grand Slam is ingrained in our spirit. It is so exciting that it has been connected to more than just baseball. Denny’s has a breakfast Grand Slam. In hunting, there is a Grand Slam. If you Google the term Grand Slam, you will find tennis, running and golf all have one. For those sports, it means winning each of the major events of that sport. That is impressive. But put your favorite baseball cap on, and think about this: your favorite team (mine is the Detroit Tigers) is up to bat. It is the bottom of the ninth inning and your team is down three runs. There are two outs already. The bases are loaded. Babe Ruth steps up to the plate, and points to the upper deck in left field. The crowd is roaring. The pitch is delivered, and the Big Bambino slams the ball to the left field upper deck! He walks off with a Grand Slam home run, and wins the game. The crowd goes wild!
At home plate
IBM has achieved their own Grand Slam when they delivered their first expert integrated system for Hadoop. To understand why this is so important as to warrant being called a Grand Slam, you need to understand the emerging pattern for big data. At the very entrance of this pattern, you have the Great Wall of Data. There is every data type you can think of, from structured and unstructured data, machine data, text data, Twitter, Facebook and geospacial data—and the list grows. Companies are paying attention to this data to help give them an edge in the market place. To start the process of gaining insight, you must first capture this data. We call this the landing zone.
With the IBM PureData for Hadoop expert integrated system, you can store (land) the Great Wall of Data. IBM BigInsights is installed on this system. At the heart of the system is open-source Hadoop. Hadoop is what allows you to store all of these different data types in a single database. For more background on Hadoop, please obtain your free copy of Hadoop for Dummies. But BigInsights does not stop there. If it did stop there, how would you conquer the Great Wall of Data? BigInsights includes accelerators that enable you to utilize these disparate data types. It gives you a text engine to process the text data. They also provide you with a statistical analysis accelerator to help you understand the numbers being thrown at you. They even provide an accelerator called BigSheets that allows you to organize your numerical data in a spreadsheet format for further analysis.
The best part of this solution is that you do not have to develop and test different hardware combinations to install. We are finding that many companies realize that this Great Wall of Data is coming at them, so they are building Hadoop clusters in their labs to try and understand and build the right architecture to run this on. IBM has done their homework. They have designed an extensible reference architecture for delivering this, and it is built into the PureData for Hadoop solution. It has all of the storage nodes and management nodes built into this. It has the right mix of cores, memory and storage to handle the Hadoop workloads. It also has the right network installed to handle the velocity of data coming in, and your company’s hunger to get the information out. The beauty of this solution is that it gets delivered to your door already installed. That is everything: hardware, software and network. Think about all those days in the lab. IBM can deliver it to you and you can start using it day one! The best part of this solution is that it is less expensive to store data here than in traditional enterprise level storage systems. So, it saves you money too!
At this point, PureData for Hadoop is up to bat. We have established that the Great Wall of Data is coming at you, and we need to deal with it. This expert integrated system is going to help you harness this wealth of information. This is not the Grand Slam. A solitary person can not make a Grand Slam. If your team is not out there to fill the bases, there is no way to get a Grand Slam. Please stay tuned for the rest of the story—the team effort!
