As Vice President of WorldWide Marketing for IBM’s revolutionary PureSystems brand, I’ve had the incredible honor to establish a brand new category of systems — Expert Integrated Systems — over the last year. It began on April 11th, 2012, when we announced IBM’s PureSystem family and introduced the first two family members: PureFlex and PureApplication System, setting a new bar for best-of-breed integrated systems. If I had to choose one word to sum up those early days, it would be “thrilling.”
Over the next twelve months, we watched as the market shifted to understand and embrace the characteristics of simplified experience, built-in expertise and integration by design, as well as expanded the global IT lexicon to include new phrases like “Patterns of Expertise.” We continued to roll out exciting new capabilities, such as IBM PureData System in four models and bringing the power of the PureApplication System to mid-sized business with the new “mini model.” As we now approach the one-year birthday, there is much to reflect on.
In less than one year, we have sold 2,300 systems, amassed 116 client and partner references and have over 350 optimized “patterns of expertise” that offer clients real value in application deployment time, simplicity and performance. While it’s been an enviable beginning in many respects, as the song says, “We’ve only just begun.”
In honor of this important milestone, top leaders will join me in posting their reflections over the last year on this blog, and perhaps more importantly, they will share their predictions on what’s to come. I hope you’ll come and join us in celebrating PureSystems one-year birthday by:
- Reviewing an interactive timeline of key PureSystems milestones over the past year.
- Participating in a photostream of pictures from all you PureSystems advocates wishing PureSystems a happy birthday. To show up in this photostream, simply take a creative picture or video wishing PureSystems a happy birthday, post a link to the photo on Twitter, and include the hashtags #PureHappy and #PureSystems in your tweet.

Today, I kick off the Pure reflections blog series with a couple of my own reflections.
What does the one year milestone of PureSystems mean to you?
It’s a unique opportunity to launch a new product line and brand in any company. It’s a rare occurrence to announce a new IBM brand and type of offering that changes the economics of IT and establishes a new approach that leverages built-in expertise and changes the client experience. We’ve engaged with thousands of clients and partners globally and the value proposition of PureSystems resonates, helping clients deliver business value faster with significant improvements in cost and performance. Early adopters and partners recognize the value that these expert integrated systems deliver to help them transform their business. We announced three new systems and multiple models to address everything from simplifying deployment of cloud infrastructure and cloud application platforms to accelerating big data and analytics. We have many milestones to celebrate, including the first client reference for “multiple” systems at The Desert Research Institute (DRI), The birth of the “mini” PureApplication System and over 90 new MSP footprints.
What are some of the learnings that your team has encountered in this first year?
Creating a new category of computing (expert integrated systems) and delivering a new IBM set of offerings is a journey. We’ve learned that the workload and our use of patterns is unique and a key driver in adoption. We’ve learned that our expert integrated systems are innovative and require coordination of roles within the client environment and data centers for success. And we’ve learned that the ecosystem of partners is a critical component of the value of these systems and that we see some new business models emerging in the channel for Managed Service Providers around use of this technology. The most exciting part of this early stage was learning that we really had a unique approach that set us apart from the rest of the market. The hard part is getting beyond the early adopters and ramping up the channel and revenue. But we’re up for the challenge and off to a good start!
What are some of the other client examples that you are seeing so far in this journey?
It’s been great watching how our clients and partners use PureSystems to drive some pretty amazing results in their industries over this past year. The playlist below highlights some of their success stories. To name just a few:
Desert Research Institute and the Environmental Systems Research Institute
The Desert Research Institute (DRI), the environmental arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, used two of the PureSystems family members, PureApplication System and PureData System to lead a fundamental breakthrough that will allow them to change processes that will speed scientific application. This technology, in combination with DRI’s Center of Excellence, enables scientists and engineers to analyze and visualize large data sets in near-real time. See press release.
The Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri), an IBM Premier Business Partner, played an important role in this solution. DRI is a long-standing Esri customer, and the Esri ArcGIS application heavily influenced DRI’s decision to commit to PureSystems offerings. DRI maintains a system-wide license of Esri geographic information system (GIS) software packages, including the ArcGIS scalable GIS software.
Sogeti is set out to better serve its customers and oversee its consulting business. To do this they needed a security-rich infrastructure that could provide up to 800 virtual machines and 50 TB of storage, but without the overhead of traditional data center implementations. Now, with PureFlex System, Sogeti is deploying solutions in hours or days vs weeks or months and has a 60% increase in system capacity without increasing administration staff. See video and blog.
Valecard, a leading credit card and data services company, experienced rapid expansion of its business, with growth above 40 percent annually over the past three years, With PureFlex System, they have seamless scalability, always-on availability and have slashed operational costs by 30 percent. See the video and case study.
That’s what we’ve been up to this past year–hard work, amazing results and Pure Fun!
